Hi

Just wondered if anyone can help.
I have a 1879 shilling queen victoria and would like to know how you distinguish between the fourth head and third head design as this makes a big difference to the value.
It is either a type A5 or A7 as there is no die number.

Many thanks

Mark

Welcome to the forum!

My 1998 Coincraft catalog does not list a 1879 with head 3.
All the 1879s I see listed have head 4.
As for the differences, the book says head 4 has "slightly older features."

Comparing the photos of head 3 (left) and head 4 (right), it seems the 4th head is slightly smaller and rounder, and the neck is not so thick, and the cheeks are not so prominent.
