I have a chance to pick up a pair of 1921 Peace dollars. I call them "Boxers" because they look like their noses have been broken. Needless to say I have doubts that they are genuine. Has anyone seen anything like this before? I've always wanted one, but I want to know it's a real one before I buy. I'd appreciate any help I can get.
I'm not an expert either but they look genuine to me. I agree with Chute that the first one has some kind of damage to the nose. Can you post a picture of the reverse if you are still worried?
Welcome to Coin Community, Yogisd1. That's what a 1921 should look like, although the top one has something going on at the nose - note the circle of different color like something splashed onto it.
These are more available than the market thinks, and tend to be overpriced. I wouldn't give more than $100 for the pair, maybe a little more.
A magnet is not attracted to them. The person wants 130.00 for the pair. It seems a little high, and I'm not in a hurry to get one. Here are the backs of the coins.
That's not really terrible, but I wouldn't snag them as collection pieces. Maybe to flip on ebay. It would be a chance but one with a decent upside. The fact I wouldn't give $150 for them doesn't mean I don't think I could get $100 each on ebay.
They both seem to be in rough condition with much wear. Get them in at least EF condition or AU. I know it is more money, but there are an abundance of these coins in much better condition for a collection. I would rather pay a few bucks more for a better coin.
