I've been getting nickel dollars at face from my LCS to look for varieties and such. Are all the dollars turned into the banks being sent for melting in the ARP? It seems a shame when you see a decent looking AU dollar to cast it aside to be destroyed. I should add that I've never had any appreciation for this series until recently.

It's an easy series to collect. And 100% nickel I believe. I really don't like the ARP.

Answer is yes and no. They normally hold onto them and hope that someone comes and buys them, if they sit for too long then yes they do send them back.

It really depends on the branch and the branch manager. I've noticed that the size of the branch or brand doesn't have an impact on policy. Some branches send all of their 50c and "silver" dollars back no matter what. Most people call them silver even if they are not... Other branches detest filling out the paperwork involved and hold them until someone comes in and asks for them or the have a list of names of people looking and give them a call to pick up. I know of one location that has been sitting on several unopened boxes of 2002 50c coins since, yes, you guessed it, 2002.
