Everyone's thoughts and opinions would be welcome here, as I can't seem to find any good visuals to compare it too. This is an 1858 20 cent with what looks like either a 1588/1858, 1888/1858 or a re-punched 5 The 1st 8 has a bit of a tail coming out of the top, which is consistent with the 10 cent version of the 1558/1858 and carries a very large premium. Am I looking at something similar? Same view with different lighting The space at the bottom of the 5 seems joined in a similar pattern to other 5 over 8 coins

Pics are a little blurry and the devices are a bit flattened out but from what I can tell it looks like the re-engraved 5.

I see a little PMD---and that is all. The 5 appears to be normal because of the "joining" metal. A re-engraved 5 has a much more narrowed upright--will post pics later today.

Nice examples Lambecolin would love to own a few of those. I certainly don't profess to know much about the 20 cent coin I was just going by Charlton 67th edition. p-44

Thank you both for you comments, the example images are very helpful. I have been trying to learn as much as I can about the 1858's.
For the 1558 part, it looks like it has 1 of the two "horns", I'll see if I can get some new shots later this week that are a bit more clear, a macro lens coming for camera.

No----Look a bit closer----there are two horns. I also am looking at Charlton's re-engraved page and I am convinced his example is a complete mistake----and is responsible for all the confusion about re-engraved coins. His example is exactly the same as Photo 6 with the frontal "bump". That is NOT engraved. Photo 5 is re-engraved for sure and probably very scarce. That leaves us with a problem ---Charlton does not have a photo of a re-engraved coin.

I agree lambecolin, the 10cent piece has two horns, my example only has one, maybe a bit of wishful thinking, I tried manipulating it in photoshop to see if it would fit, but could never "hide" the second horn in the body of the 8. Maybe a little die chip is all it is.

purelywasted...I am NO expert either, but after running it through my software and making a 3D effect, I don't see the other horn...Just my opinion. Robert

When I look at the 8's here,..
...I see the tall mark on the top right of the 8 coming down through it or under it,..and then continuing into and through the bottom loop of the 8....or again,..under the bottom loop. Could something extra in the die make this happen..?
Any other views on this..?

Yes , I also see it on the 3D photo---something there. We need more magnification .

I'll see if I can get a better picture.

Not sure if this is much better or not, but it shows an almost square like chip?
