So I did pop the silver dollar out of the set today, brushed off the red flock and is that stuff ever sticky.

Will have to soak in distilled water.

My experience was the same. I have a variety of 1971 to 1973 Prestige sets that were never removed from the case, stored away for decades. When I recently took a good look at them, I was utterly aghast at what I saw was happening. At some point in time I think someone had checked out the 25c of the set looking for a LB which caused the seal of the plastic overlay to break. Then over the years a chemical reaction of parts of the glued red felt backing resulted in it becoming almost gooey, similar to the early stages of PCV breaddown. I ended up soaking the 25c and 1c in acetone but the finish on the obverse is ruined. I immediately opened the other 1971 - 1972 sets. Thankfully the red felt had only deteriorated into loose fluff easily removed by a quick wash in distiller water, not gooey.

Thankfully in 1974 they switched to a plastic frame case and this problem only affects the 71-73 series.

Decided to take action on the set today and deflocified the
plastic liner that held the coins. This involved popping all the
coins out and cleaning the rims with a soft brush. Then I took
the plastic liner outside with a brush and got rid of the flock,
under that is red plastic with a rough finish which was sticky. I
washed the red plastic liner in mild soap and water and gave it a
scrub with a soft bristled brush. Got rid of any traces of flock
or fluff in the case. Windexed the plastic window, and reinserted
the coins. The penny I was pleasantly surprised to find a blue
toned obverse, not too much damage. See pictures of the penny
and process.

Still have to soak coins in distilled water, and may have
to use a mild soap and water mixture to remove the
reddish residue on the coins left there by the red
fluff/flock. I like having the set displayed together,
this may be a method to keep the set intact but lose the
annoying red stuff.

Soaking in distilled water.

Coins after soaking and mild qtip cleaning.

I am happy with the result. I have never come close to
cleaning a coin and wouldn't under normal circumstances.
But the red flock was too much to handle. May do the
same for the 1972 set. Not as if I am going to send any
of these in for grading.

Or, just use a set case from 1974 and use the capsules within that protect the coins... and display the set in that...

How did the obverse side of the penny turn out.
Were you able to get rid of the blue?

Took this with the phone, post bath and cleanup.
Still steely bluish. Less crud.

That's a nice cent, definitely a survivor compared to others left in the case that long and oh the eye appeal of that blue! If it was worth more I would send her out for conservation.

I like the blue toning on that cent dollarman, as well I like the toning on the silver dollar.
The rims are square, the 50 Cent coin in Specimen is nice. The leather case has a smell to it.
The specimen quarter is what I was after originally, having fun with this set that's for sure.

Yes you definitely lucked out on the condition of those obverses. Here's hoping you're not picking out red bits in all of your laundry for the next week!

Thanks universalcoins, I got lucky on those toned
beauties and the obverses of the nickel coins were unscathed. The
defloculation process is best done outside on a windy day, hold the
liner out as far away from your body as possible and vigorously brush
down wind. I saw a patch of red on the deck this morning. Darn
stuff. I can safely say I am rid of the fluff from that set, and
rewarded with some toned specimen coins.

Here are some pictures of the obverses,
the penny and the set.
The silver dollar cleaned up nicely.
The nickel dollar shows some tarnish.
