So looking at this 1942 5 cent coin, I went looking to find a mint mark & believe I see a "small s" beside the building & not a large mint mark on top of the building like on the wartime nickles...

Here is the page I found on this coin:

I don't really see it from your pictures. I've done the same thing with 1942 nickels: believing I see that mint mark and then when I think about it, if I have to magnify and look at it under certain lighting to see a faint S, it isn't too worth it. But I definitely understand wanting to know.

Speculation is that an employee made it through experimentation. They might have only made one and kept it for themselves, over the years it eventually got put into circulation by mistake.

On a side note, giving the credit of discovery to the buyer made me uneasy: "This 1942 Jefferson nickel was found in circulation by someone who then brought it to Mr. Frith's attention[.]At this time, the rare nickel discovered by Mr. Ken Frith is the only one known to exist."

I see what your talking about but it could just be an illusion of toning or PMD dings. Unless you have a grease mm of a very rare coin where the mm is the diagnostic? See where I'm going here... and what's up with the 42? Looks different than the 19?

Looks like a Philly mint coin to me. If it were a San Francisco, the mint mark would be raised. I see no evidence of this.

The only one I see it in is the 3rd to last picture I defiantly see an S. Idk it's so faint. And it's really small compared to a regular sized mint mark. The coin has seen a lot of circulation to it could have been someone messing around with a die set who knows
