Canada had gotten rid of the penny.. but the prices haven't... so they will round up or down if you are paying cash.
ie: if the item is $4.32 and you pay cash ... it's $4.30
if item is $4.36 and you pay cash.. cashier will generally accept $4.35 no problem..
if the item is $4.37 or greater cashier will state it's $4.40
Not really related to the topic but came to my mind as I was reading it... (as the cashiers here can't give cents in change)

Quote: Interesting, my experience is the exact opposite. I find many people round in my favor when returning change so they don't have to mess with the pennies. Also, I'm frequently "forgiven" when I don't have a cent or two. My experience is the same. Most will always round cash down because it is still cheaper than paying electronic payment processing.

Instead of two quarters I want the 49 cents. More change to look at.

The stores I often go to round to the nearest nickel on the change, I also keep an eye on the need a penny jars. I've found more wheaties there than roll hunting. If I find one I just trade it with a nickel.

Many people actually throw away the cent coins they receive in change. Cashiers are right to think their customers probably don't want them. If you round to the nearest nickel on every transaction, your till will almost certainly be correct at the end of the day, which is all that matters.

How times have changed. When I worked at a cash register in my youth, I had to balance the register every day...to the penny!

Rounding here in Canada works quite well. Not only is it time for the demise of your cent but the nickel as well add in the one and two dollar bill. We are heading to a cashless society anyways.

The smallest denomination of money but it's still money. Who would through that away? Just as frustrating to me when people walk over change on the sidewalk. It may just be a penny but its FREE MONEY. Fine, goes in my jar then.
