My birthday is Tuesday and I might have some spare cash soon. Not much, maybe around $50 or a little more if I'm lucky. I have really gotten into trying to complete a walking liberty album. I mostly pull from junk boxes but I thought with my birthday maybe I should try for one of the keys.
Do you think it would be better long term to try to find a 1938-d half in my budget in like g-4 or just continue to fill in the other holes with non-key walkers since silver is low right now and I have so many common ones I need.
I have never bought a coin that wasn't common and around bullion price. I have like 14 walkers so far in my album ranging from AU-58 to AG. I know I'm weird but I don't mind them being different grades, I like all of them having their own personalities. Is there anything specific I should look at in a 1938-d to make sure it's genuine? I plan on getting it from own of my usual LCS's.

In my opinion, I'd get the non keys right away since silver is low, and then buy the 1938-d after I've saved up a reasonable amount

Maybe I should ask for one for Christmas haha. I would ask for my birthday but I'm getting a bigger safe.

There's nothing like the feeling of having a big secure safe. Well played & HB

It's your birthday. I'd recommend getting the best semi-key coin you can afford. 1923-s, 1928-s, 1929-d or -s, or 1933-s, for instance. See if you can find a VF for a good price.

I'm with NickelCollector. Buy the cheapies which track melt while melt is low. The '38-D won't be as affected if silver rises, and doubling your $50 on that one should put you into a nice VF from a good dealer. There are some 6,000 of these in the listed Pops from PCGS and NGC - they won't be that hard to find.

Ok I'm convinced to continue adding some of the common ones. They look so cool in volume.

Yup fill the album with non-keys if you are using "junk" silver coins to do it. The keys are less sensitive to silver fluctuations. I filled my Barber, Walker and Franklin albums completely right now. I can always upgrade later on and use the existing one as the "silver value" trade up.

Quote: I'd recommend getting the best semi-key coin you can afford. Get the keys out of the way. When you come into a sizable amount you're going to spend on your collection get a great coin. A key, semi key or a coin in really great condition. Coins like this are what make a good collection great. Just my opinion.

The Walking liberty set is awesome. If you are filling holes with average circulation examples I would say spend the $50 on multiple holes. To me that would bring more satisfaction. I did that as a young man and was very happy with the set until I decided I wanted higher grade coins for this beautiful design. Then I have found upgrade examples and sent the lower grade ones to the silver pile. Happy hunting. Oh and just a tease for you.

Keep up with the common walkers . continue searching dealers junk boxes. If you can get to a local show near where you live, try that. leave the key dates for when you run into extra money.

General Rule of Thumb: Buy the keys and semi-keys first. They are the coins that grow in value the fastest. That's means they will be relatively more expensive as time goes by.
