I'm writing to solicit opinions on whether or not I should purchase the following coin. The dealer, with whom I've done previous business, has it marked at $1500 but offered it to me for $1100. He said the test cut on the edge at 12 o'clock is saving me a fair amount of money. I've been looking for an example of this approximate quality for some time and wanted to consult with the forum before making a move. What do we think of the coin and its price? What would you expect to pay for such a coin? Thanks for reading.

It's a very nice example but IMO $1100 is still a bit steep. I think $800-$900 would be a fair price.

I would say $700-$800. They are just not rare and are easily had in high grade. I see no crest on Athena and thus doesn't command anywhere near $1500.

Agree it is a little pricey. For a test cut that is a minor cut.

Always counter offer.

When in a purchasing function, I always say you haven't done your job if you haven't made them say no at least once.

Would not be much of a Buckeye if I didn't notice that you were looking to make your purchase in Ann Arbor Michigan.

For $1100 I would expect a flan big enough to show complete features at least on the owl, or preferably both sides. The helmet crest is completely off flan on this one. Assuming the weight is right I would not go more than $895. Peg--- won't let you have it for that because they tend to run high, but there are plenty more of these around. Eventually you'll connect, and then the heat will move to something else.
