I haven't been checking my one email account as often the past couple of weeks.

I saw this article and knew there are quite a few copper enthusiasts here at CCF.

New discovery is the highest grade reported by a considerable margin.

Enjoy

This was a big deal when it happened. Luckily (or un-luckily however you look at it) it caught the attention of several EAC members and investors and the coin went for high $$$$.

I think this is the second high grade S-96 to show up in an"obscure English auction house" in the past year or so.

Wow. I too found this coin in the auction catalog. I initially was very excited and requested a reverse photo and weight. I eventually resigned myself it was too good to be true and was likely an electrotype counterfeit. I am actually sort of relieved multiple big hitters found out about it as I am sure it went for way more than I could have gone.

I remember the coin had an estimate of I think 200-300 GBP

We had a big boon for coin collectors at the end of the 18th century with the trademen tokens so there are many big collections of mint grade stuff from that time. I wouldnt be surprised if stuff like this continues to crop up.

You can get an 18th century conder halfpenny for £50 in EF+ with mint red. Some of the designs are worth more than that (especially the anti-slavery and establishment ones, though some are common enough to be cheap - a good one is the anti-french coin), but most are readily available on the cheap.

I love the antislavery Conders. It's all I can do to avoid taking them up - I have a hard enough time feeding myself as it is.

Now I remember what scared me about this coin. The auction company sent me photographs of the edge of the coin and I thought it looked strange. Thoughts?
