I have a question not so much about my topic, but in general.
I'll use this topic header as an example.

I'm scoping out ebay for some 2009 Lincoln Bicentennial Rolls.
I see people selling un-opened boxes of P&D varieties straight from the mint.

Is there some advantage of these un-opened boxes staying closed?
Why does the mint do this?
Why do people sell them this way?

Am I missing something in the collecting scheme of things?

I first saw this box thing when my boss recently received some coins from the mint. The Kennedy set. It's boxed up in the box with a date and time. These Lincoln rolls are the same way. I'm simply wondering whats the deal with it?

Thanks

The Mint sells them that way because there's a market. I'm not sure that preserving them whole is part of our admitted obligation to the future.

There are, most certainly, folks who think they have some value as a box. The mind works in mysterious ways.

The only reason to keep the boxes sealed would be if the series is known for some very valuable variety. An unsearched, original box is a good place to get said variety on the cheap, if they were mixed in prior to rolling, boxing, and shipping. The 2009 cents are host to 100+ varieties, but unfortunately none command a significant premium and are in very short demand due to the near-impossibility of finding the whole set.

So I'm gonna bump this topic back to the top for the next few days as I have more questions relating to this topic of the 2009 Cent Rolls.

Because I love a good hunt, I decided to figure some things out about this 2009 Cent Roll from the US Mint. As I look at all the available boxes time stamped and sealed from the Mint, I decided to do some detective work.

Let me break it down.

The 2009 Cent has 4 different designs.
Each design basically being released each quarter.
The Mint sold the 2 Roll P&D set for $8.95
We have the following designs (LPx being the Mints Product # for the P&D Rolls)
LP1 Birth And Early Childhood
LP2 Formative Years
LP3 Professional Life
LP4 Presidency

The official release for the cent design are as follows:
2/12/09 Birth And Early Childhood
5/14/09 Formative Years
8/13/09 Professional Life
11/12/09 Presidency

Now here is where the hunt begins.
Back to the 2 roll sealed box from the Mint for $8.95
These boxes are time stamped, SOOOOO I decided to make a small database of early and latest time stamp per product.
I found this info via searching ebay for about an hour.

LP1 Birth And Early Childhood
Earliest Date: 2/25/09 12:54
Latest Date: 3/16/09 11:57

LP2 Formative Years
Earliest Date: 4/13/09 10:47
Latest Date: 6/05/09 14:31

LP3 Professional Life
Earliest Date: 7/15/09 14:16
Latest Date: 8/17/09 13:16

LP4 Presidency
Earliest Date: 10/23/09 10:37
Latest Date: 12/21/09 8:27

If you see dates later or earlier per product, let me know so I can change the database.
The data I see here is actually pretty fascinating to me.
I love it.

Now I have 2 big questions?
#1 What does the date on the box mean?
Packaged date and time, not minted time correct?

#2 Why are there dates on boxes prior to the official release date?

Thank you there will be more.

Number 2 is an easy answer. The dates are going to be before the release cause the coins are both minted and packaged before the release. For instance I have seen full set of 2015 ATB Quarters already but they have not all been released but you can get a proof set somehow. That's because they are already done.

This is the fact which puts the lie to the "First Strike" TPG designation.

I know for a fact that quite a few different varieties were found in each date of the Formative Years sets. I personally went through and tried to catalog the findings from each date and time stamp plus the different group # like the 9884 or 7719 I think is on them as well. I know the most famous of these varieties were found in the 6/16 dated with the large die crack on the reverse. The 6/29 dated ones I found the DDR#1, DDR#2's and in a very special dated one I'll keep secret I found the DDR#1 with the STRUCK through on the Obverse being a double error.
