I found an old thread on this but think things can change in a couple of years with trends, pricing, availability, etc. What I'm wondering about is what collecting strategies work the best. Mint sets from auction? Bundles of SBA year sets from auction or known dealers? I only have the Dansco so far, the 8180 (I know, I know) My goal is to put together a BU+/proof set and I just want to start out on the right foot. Any comments would be appreciated.

I am not a big fan of the Sacagawea and Presidential dollars but feel oddly attracted to SBA's, even with the ugly portrait and visual similarity to quarters. When I am at the store or bank I ask for them and have accumulated several hundred. I saved the best for my books and any ones that appeal to me get put in flips. I like Ike's too due to the immense size. They are worthless for use as a currency but I save any I can get.

I have one SBA for my U.S. Type Set; 1979-P SBA Wide Rim (Near Date) PCGS MS66
They should be relatively easy to find in UNC and Proof Condition. CCF members can sell/trade you ones you need to fill up that 8180 Dansco Album. I have quite a few UNCs (1979 PDS, 1980 PDS and 1981 PDS) if you need them.

You should be able to find the 79-81 mint sets for around face. I've purchased about 150 of them over the last couple of years.

As others posted .. buying mint sets would be the beat way as far as price. 1979, 1980 and 1981 mint sets can be bought from face .. to greysheet, pretty easy. There is also 3 coin souvenir sets can also be found, but they may be higher in price but close. Finding them with higher grade coins can be difficult, the quality of coins for those years is more lower grade BU .. than the higher grades. The 1999's are not in the mint and proof sets, but can be found pretty easy in their own sets. Also I would say SBA P/D coins are not known as a full strike coins. You will hear people mention full talon coins. I have looked at a good number of SBA's and have not seen a full talon coin. Good luck .. it should not be to hard putting a decent looking set together.

I started off with pulling from circulation, then eventually upgraded with mint sets (except the 1979-S, which was not in the 1979 mint set). My 1999s are both from circulation; did they include them in any of the sets that year? I recall at my LCS several months back, in a pile of mint sets I was going through looking for Kennedy halves, I came across a 1999 SBA in a mint-set-type package. But I was always of the understanding that SBAs were not in regular mint or proof sets in 1999?

I am currently doing a PCGS registry of SBA's in MS66 and PR69. Just got the 81 P, 81 S, and 81 proof S to go. The 81 S in MS66 is going to be hard as the last one I saw in auction went for about 1k.

Thanks all, I appreciate the information. Quote:I am not a big fan of the Sacagawea and Presidential dollars but feel oddly attracted to SBA's, even with the ugly portrait and visual similarity to quarters. I know exactly what you are saying and couldn't agree more. I guess the history appeals to me. Quote: There is also 3 coin souvenir sets can also be found, but they may be higher in price but close. I have been seeing these souvenir sets GR58, are these the "green packs"? Quote: You should be able to find the 79-81 mint sets for around face. I have a fifteen coin SBA date and mint set with proofs, which means I have none of the varieties. I used the blank SBA Dansco page with sixteen holes. The sixteenth hole has the SBA sized mint medal which came from my 1982 proof set (the lens had the space for a SBA, which was not issued that year).

Hi jbuck I thought long and hard about which album to get and finally decided that the 8180 would fit in better with my pile of unfinished Dansco albums. Sounds like you put together a nice set.

One thing I would suggest would be to buy the proofs already in the holders you're going to keep them in. I cracked mine out of proof sets and transferred them to a Capitol Plastics holder. The display looks great, but a couple of the proofs have taken on a milky white color. You can get the proofs certified already for not much of a premium at all. Since they have likely been in the holder for a while already, you'll know by looking at them whether or not the appearance is going to be good. Another observation is that the '99 SBA's in the mint sets appear to be of higher grade than those in the '79-'81 mint sets.

Sounds like you put together a nice set. I like it. It was easy, being just one page, and I added it to an existing album. Bonus point to the person who can tell me which album.
