Hi I have come across one of the new £2 coin design. And was wandering if anybody knows what the difference between the 100 Ltd edition ones and the normal one is. Also the one I have has no writing on the edge is this normal? Plus the queens head and the water on the reverse are white. Anyone know anything about this?

Strange. The difference between the 100 coins and the normal one (at least at the moment) is that the normal ones come in a packet from the mint and cost £10. However, once they hit general circulation later in the year they're going to have the new 5th queens portrait on them.
As for your coin, it may be a forgery.
A picture or three (both sides and the edge) would help immensely.

Oh wow... I predicted this a while ago, and it looks like I was right. I believe your coin is a Chinese counterfeit. I found them for sale online using this heads side (which is actually from the Magna Carta £2) instead of the original one, but wasn't sure whether they were being produced in this way. ( The Royal Mint website didn't show a heads side for this coin as it was due to change to the new head) The main giveaway is no edge lettering. This is put on before the edge milling so to have milling with no words is virtually impossible on these types of coins. (The milling looks bigger than a bonafide coin too) Then there's the frosted finish and good looking join of the two metals. This in itself would just mean it was a proof coin, struck to a better standard with polished dies for collectors sets, but coupled with the wrong heads side and the lack of edge letters confirms it. Interesting curio if nothing else. If you would sell it, I collect fakes and would buy it for £3.50 delivered if you want. (By all means get another opinion, but don't take it to the bank as they may actually take it off you.) P.S If you could get a picture of the other side for reference that would be awesome.

I noticed you posted on The Royal Mint facebook page... I hope they get back to you as they have actually been made aware of the producers of these coins. BTW There's a group called Error Coins & Fakes https://www.facebook.com/groups/CoinErrors/where my original post regarding this, and an update saying they've been found.

Thanks for that. I'm still finding it hard to belive that such good quality coins are being made. If that is the case then we could be in trouble in the future.

After a bit of detective work (and a bit of help, Cheers Matthew) it seems that the south of wales is the hotspot. 4 coins so far, yours, another in Swansea, someone from Caerphilly and someone from Port Talbot.
Going off the ones we know about, there's only another 2396 to find in wales !! (and another
Edit: now 5 (Possibly 6) all centered around wales so that's where the mysterious bulk-buyer is either based or is offloading them.
