A Cud is a specific type of die break that affects the face and shank of a die whereas a die chip will only affect the face of a die. A die can continue to strike many coins after it chips but a Cud is a sign of oncoming die failure and the Cud will progress in size with repeated strikes.

A lot of definitions I see like to say it's the size but on Cuds on coins they have a nice pic of the whole shank being affected like your saying.
