Looks like PMD to me. The coin is starting to corrode. I don't believe it would be worth anything. Lets see what the others think.

IF you could prove that the differences between the coins pictured and normal coins were caused by die strike, then the U.S. Mint would have some serious questions about quality control to answer!
The penny looks to be suffering from plating damage and zinc corrosion, The nickel looks to be a victim of 'road kill'.

is that a bad thing if I can prove it?

Unfortunately you won't be able to prove it, because none of this happened at the mint. The people who replied were absolutely correct in their conclusion about these being damaged coins. Anything you may be seeing on these coins (stars, letters, eagles) is just a case of the brain seeing patterns where nothing really exists. Like seeing the image of Elvis on a slice of burnt toast or animals in the clouds.
The best thing to do is to learn what CAN happen at the mint and look for those types of coins. There are a limited number of things that happen at the mint to cause an error or variety, but there is an infinite number of ways a coin can be altered, smashed, beaten, run over, corroded, cut, sliced and diced once it leaves the mint. The key is knowing what can happen in the minting process versus what can happen after.
Keep looking, there are good coins waiting to be found, and the more you learn here, the more actual errors and varieties you will find.

I would have to go with the popular consensus on this one. Road rash.

I am definitely not making fun of new collectors. We need all of the young numismatists that we can get. I apologize to anyone this offended. When I was young this would have been an interesting find not knowing what it was. I wouldn't have had this great forum to ask.

Quote: so if I shine these up 4 him it not a bad thing to do so right?i The motive is pure....However, you would be misguiding him as to what they actually are. This hobby is research intensive!....to say the least.

It's a hunt as well, can't expect to find treasures all the time. I think it's cool how supportive you are of his hobby and actively learning the hobby yourself as well. :)
