I saw this posting for a 2015 toonie graded MS-66

http://www.ebay.ca/itm/131483544305?nav=SEARCH

And they say trend value is $70.00 in that grade. I am wondering how that value gets determined with these coins just being released? With the ebay completed listings in that grade there have only been 3 sold (one for $35 and two for $50).

They can say whatever that they want in advertising, but I'm sure that it's a "SWAG". You should be able to get any modern common coin for 50% of Trends and usually 70% for anything else but scarce high-grade stuff. "Trends" is not the literal definition of "trending"; rather it is the "boy, I wish I could get this" price.

Prices are determined by what people are willing to pay.
Auction results are often the most accurate.
And the rush to be the first to own a high grade recent release often causes high prices over the short term.

I remember when a 1974-S "brown Ike" (90% silver proof) was priced at $100+.
Now they are one-third to one-quarter of that.

Any coin in MS65 is almost completely unblemished.
Almost all coins issued for circulation have bag marks.

In fact with freshly issued Australian coins of the current year (whatever that year is), I have yet to see a new, freshly issued for circulation coin without bag marks. Typical grade for brand new coins issued for circulation typically being MS60 at worst, MS62 at best.

To find uncirculated coins in MS65, specially minted coins for collectors are required. Broken mint sets are the usual source for these. These coins are individually recovered from the coining presses, set aside and packaged into sets of coins specifically for collectors.

With the Toonie that you are interested in, it is almost certain that it is a coin that was intended for the collector market. The trend would have been established for collector Toonies of immediately previous years.

Ok that makes more sense, thanks for the replies. I figured trends were mostly based off auction results but I figured if this coin hasn't been out for very long then there can't be many completed results to compare it to. I didn't realize about the bag marks on new coins either. I figured if I came across some 2015 toonies within the next while they would be so new that getting a high MS wouldn't be too difficult.

Trends is artificially high in an optimistic sort of way. Some PL singles list for up to a thousand+ percent of what they actually sell for. However, some things are also undervalued in Trends

Trends " The Wish List " should be a disclaimer with this e.g don't expect to get anywhere near these prices. Don't know why it exists as a reference.
