Your dime is around 92% copper, plated with nickel. Damage to the plating can show the copper or oxidized copper. PMD

They are NOT plated with nickel. They are a copper core with a layer of coppernickel alloy bonded to each side. Each of those outer layers are about 25% of the weight of the coin and are 25% nickel. It is not a plating.

And the overall composition of the coin is about 87.5% copper and 12.5% nickel.

If it were plated, the edges of the coin would be the same color.
