I got a good deal on some dansco albums, but when I cracked open the box all I got was a big whiff of cigar smoke and the albums (great condition). Is there any saving them or is return the only option? I discarded the box immediately (checked and still reeks after spraying and leaving outside yesterday- not the albums, haven't done anything to them yet). The albums are in my desk drawer and I'm still smelling cigar sitting here. Any recommendations? I've never returned anything on ebay and I assume shipping 3 albums is going to cost $5 - 8 depending on method, 40% of purchase price. The advertisement did not indicate they were kept in smoke shop or man cave smoke room for years.

you can use coffee grounds (un-used) or baking soda to eliminate the odors, I would put them in a box with the open package of coffee or baking soda and put it somewhere over night and check it the next day.

Baking soda would work well, there is also a product made specifically to remove cigar smoke odor, it is some type of spray but I cannot remember what it is called

Those are good suggestions. I was going to say the smell will leave over time, maybe not over night, but eventually.

I wonder if this is the person who sold them to you?

@tbone- that's great! I think the smell I get from imaging that picture would be accurate. I'm assuming the seller was not the original owner and received them from an older collector who bought them, never used them and had them on his/her coffee table under the ash tray for 20 years. Although maybe it was the seller, I mean who packs with packing peanuts marinated in smoke these days?

Yes return them. you print out a return label straight from ebay. Just follow their prosses. No need to contact seller... there is no way you will sufficientLY remove that smell from such porous material as cardboard... return them now!

Was there any update as to what happened here? I am in the same boat and I really wouldn't want to return it if possible since it is a Mexico type dansco album I purchased :( did the baking soda help? Thanks!

Baking soda works... At least for a model train and its box/instructions I bought off ebay...

Hmm.. Well do you think I should acetone all the coins and do the album by itself? Also how do you use the baking soda? Put it on the album or just in a container with it separated?

I'd acetone the coins, and use baking soda for the album... Take out the plastic inserts, and place them out in a box next to the album. Put one of those baking soda boxes you use in your fridge and stick it in the box. Seal the box and wait. You may want to take out the pages of the album.

Thank you sir I will give it a try. Worst case scenario if it doesn't work I just have to return it. Hope it works! I just wouldn't want it to spread to my other albums (would it even do that?)
