is styrofoam safe around silver coins? I want to pack unused space in coin tubes and am wondering if packing peanuts will be ok?

Off the top of my head I'd say you were safe. Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) is not the problem - the plasticizers added to make it flexible are the problem. Styrofoam (Polystyrene) shouldn't have that problem.

Await further opinion.

I'm pretty sure massive polystyrene is a typical material for coin tubes.

Yeah, that too. It's pretty stiff stuff when you don't blow air through it before it solidifies.

Should be safe but I wouldn't put it in direct contact with coins (it will hold moisture)....buffering tubes of coins, no issue. Just make sure your outer container seals well so the foam can't absorb a bunch of water.

Paper products typically contain sulfur compounds.

No problem with styrofoam.

The Royal Australian Mint used to ship their proof coins in styrofoam packaging.
These days, those proof sets 'with foams' command higher prices at auction, than those equivalent proof sets that no longer have foams ('no foams').

Styrofoam OK!
