Since 1837 they have used a collar to hold the coin in place to keep it round and on reeded coins to make the reeding. Also the collar is used on dollar coins to make the edge lettering on proof coins. (not sure on the business strike coins though)

Back to the real subject at hand. The die that struck your quarter was damaged as Dave mention with the feeder fingers. These are more interesting than valuable. There maybe a small premium for these on BU coins, but on circulated they see to just be interesting.

Either way according to coop you do have an error coin I feel either way it has value to you guys because it is your first legit one right? Did your kid find it? Either way congrats-and I'm guessing enough to keep you guys going now and look for more...you'll go long periods of time not finding anything at all but keep at it and you'll find interesting stuff and more you learn here the quicker you can process your way through coins and increase your chances

The nice thing about finding something is telling me your eyes are starting to pick up the different designs of the coins you looking at. So when you do find a doubled die, RPM or a great error, you will know it for sure. Keep looking, the next coin may have something special to show you.

We try to avoid adding images to signatures. I think coop made the right call, using them on a per-post basis.
