JFK Half Dollar Roll Hunters: Silver, Proofs And Other Finds

The 2001-P is an NIFC, I was told. The 2001-D isn't, from what I hear

Cabo, another great score. Things are slowing down a bit, cracked another 12 boxes this week, 1 box had a 69 Kennedy. I pulled 1-74S Clad Proof, 3-11D's NIFC, I 1971 Magic Coin Obverse shell only. The best thing is when I dumped yesterday. In the overflow I got 2-64 Dimes and 1-OZNA Mexican 1984 999 Round. Overall for the week was great for scoring silver, just a different way. Okay, I gotta ask you guys a question. I'm searching boxes like you. Obviously, the majority of what we search through are beat up circulated junk clad! We occasionally get lucky and find silver.

My question: I actually need a reality check. I rarely "if ever" see, find or receive half dollars in change. I'm thinking it's the same way for you guys. If we don't see these coins being used in circulation, how in God's name are they getting so worn, beat-up and damaged?

Maybe then are being used at casinos? Any thoughts?

Mos0239 Yes half dollars are still being used in many casinos across the United States. Its hard to believe their causing all the damage. Who knows, I agree with you, its rare for me to see half dollars given out in change. Once in a while at a bank, we here don't get a lot of customers wrapped half dollar rolls at our banks in the Southern part of New Mexico.

MOS0239, great question! I too NEVER see any KHD's in any day to day cash transactions.
A theory for SOME of the coins getting dropped at banks, is they get back to the feds for re-rolling,
The combination of, say folks losing their parent, and just want to liquidate the late owner's collection,
and that's (a few would not notice to keep any 1964, and the 40% 65-70's).
The coin stores bag them up, and some get sold in store, the rest get BRINKS to take them for rerolling.
Big bulk may be from Coinstar?)
Just a theory.
I would LOVE to hear from an ex coinstar employee, if the guys in "back', cull the silver out.
Or, NOTHING is touchable by hands, to prevent, er, swapping out.
