Some-Interesting-Earlier-Counterstamps

Came across these... Thought these were some interesting earlier counterstamps...

It got me thinking how little I know in regards to counterstamps...

What is the history of this practice?

I understand historically counterstamps were used by merchants for advertising or to change the area where a currency was valid... However, it seems to me like most of the counterstamps I run across are more on par with with graffiti?

It looks like the one with the "H" on it is some sort of error. I like counterstamps but then also don't like them because its kind of like ruining a coin in a way. I like them because they were counterstamped so long ago and the counterstamp is as worn as the coin, its still a coin just with a counterstamp on it.
