What is the difference between VG and F when grading paper money? Is it the firmness of the bill , VG being limp while F is still sort of firm?
The other grades have hard and fast rules, eg "may have one crease or three folds but not both". I find the description of the difference between VG and F to be vague.
Can anyone give me an idea of what to look for

thanks

F notes may have tears from folding, but only in the margin and must not extend into the design of the note. There shouldn't be a hole in the middle of the note from excessive folding. There may be stapler holes but the note should be intact.
VG notes can have tears extending into the design, and small holes in the middle of the note where it was folded excessively. There can be major stains, but no pieces of the note may be missing.
If there are any small missing pieces and/or graffiti, it will be graded G. The more pieces missing and the more problems it has the lower it will be graded.

I only know this in theory though, if you tell me to grade a note on the spot I might not get it right especially the higher grades.

I looked up this info on a blog I find trustworthy and there are pics there, but it is in Indonesian. If you want the link anyway I'll add it.

There are not holes or tears in the ones I'm looking at , does that make them F?

And thanks , but I'm not sure pics would help.

Thanks John
these explanations are better.
Are bank note grades universal?

Not sure but I would think that any "paper" currency would be but not the "poly" currency would grade the same way.

I grade all banknotes the same way.. just like I grade all my coins the same way... doesn't matter the country of origin.

There is a bit of difference in grading with the poly notes... I did go over the section a bit in the latest Charlton guide but I really didn't put it to memory as all of my polys are UNCs.

North: a good way to think of it is an F note should still be intact and preferably a little "firm" but a VG note will have lost it's firmness... and there can be small holes are tears as mentioned earlier in the design.
