Any comments as to why there's often a huge disparity between the price guides of sites like https://www.numismedia.com and https://www.pcgs.com?

From what I have seen, PCGS.com pricing lists the highest that was ever paid for a certain coin and grade, so it is very misleading and typically very high. If I ever want to look at true market value of something, I usually don't even look at the dealer sheets. I use:

1. Completed ebay Auctions in and around the coin and grade
2. Teletrade prices realized
3. Heritage Auction prices realized
4. Sometimes I check out Harlan Berk to see what he lists for.

Bottom line, PCGS, Numismedia, the RedBook, are all "guides" only. Hope that helps.

A price guide is just that- a guide. For some series, you will have to pay many times what the "guides" say to obtain a nice coin, while for some other series the guides are horribly overpriced.
