At the flea market every Sunday there is this guy with coins and bills. He has what was an 185? or something north or south Carolina $5 bill. All I remember was that the hand written serial # looked like 314 or 34. Would it be worth it for $40? It has tares and is not in the best condition.

What you describe sounds like an Obsolete bank note but without a picture I can't be 100% sure.

Before the government got into the currency printing business, individual state banks issued their own currency which they contracted with private engraving companies such as the National Bank Note Co.

Not sure if this is of any assistance to you, but I thought I'd try to give an answer.
