I was watching Antiques Roadshow today and saw a segment where a woman brought in a medal. This episode took place in Oklahoma. It was found to be an original Jefferson Peace medal. I realized what it was when the medal was turned over and I saw the handshake. These medal were made when Thomas Jefferson was president and were given to Indians. A value of 40,000.00- 50,000.00 was given. I've never seen an original before and found this extremely interesting.

The Montecello.org web site has a nice description of these medals.

That's awesome! I just finished a book about the Lewis and Clark expedition and was wondering whatever happened to the medals they handed out on their trek across the continent. Thanks for the post!

I also watch that it about blew my mind to see 1. even needing some repair it was just the holder but what an amazing find. I don't think I would sell it!but I know I would have it repaired and send it off to PCGS as soon as I could

It looks too good. The Natives would wear those medals everywhere, and in all elements to show they were friendly to the whites. Maybe the pic is just an example. I'd think a real one would show much more wear, especially a Jefferson one. Why, that would go back to the 18th Century, not the 19th, wouldn't it? I don't know much about Peace Medals, but I sure would like to have an authentic one, but not at that PRICE~!~
