I don't see how this could possibly be a genuine mint error, which is unfortunate as the seller seems to be otherwise reputable.

I am thinking that this is either a 'mint sport' like a '13 Liberty nickel, or a 'shed job'. You would need a reasonably competant industrial press to do it, using a turned down blank and two genuine coins.

Without knowing the probability of it being a shed job, will keep the price down.

Don't get too excited if it is a mint sport. The '13 Liberty nickel is well known, with an implied high demand. I seriously doubt if this one has.

If I were to bid on it without knowing, I would be taking a speculative risk.

I don't intend to bid on it, and I agree it is most likely a well done shed/squeeze/vise job. The term "mint sport" is new to me, what exactly does that mean? Thanks. :)

A 'mint sport' is basically the same thing as a shed job, except that it is done illegally by mint employees, using minting equipment. One is an 'inside' job, the other is an 'outside' job.

Sometimes it is hard to distinguish between a mint sport and and an official minting experiment. Neither should leave the mint. Sometimes, they 'escape'.

Ah I see, basically the same thing as what's been going in at the mint over in places like India and Malaysia :)
