I think I should quit coin roll hunting for a while. Not half dollars though. If the bank ever has thoughts I will pick them up. Here is why. All the money I have ever spent using coinstar does not at all pay for my finds. I would rather buy the coins I am looking for with that money than go through and spend lot of that money and not find it. I just never find anything here crh. I might pick up a few rolls every once and a while though of pennies and nickels. The main reason is the money and never finding anything. Just thought I would share that and let you know that I won't be CRH a lot.

Never, ever use Coinstar. I don't understand why one would pay a fee, there are numerous ways to dump for free. I don't care about Coinstar discounts on stuff I will never buy.
When I listen to LED ZEPPELIN...so do my neighbors... Roll hunting since '77 Dirt fishing since '72

That makes sense for me. I would never be able to afford it if my only option was to pay a return fee like at coinstar. You should maybe look around at banks around you and see if anyone has a free coin counter. Could you roll them up in paper wraps and return them to your bank? If not I understand, I would quit doing it too.

In response to the other returning methods, If I wrap my rolls, they have to sit there and count it by each coin. ugh. And no bank near by here has any coin counting machine.

I search $100 boxes and could never justify my finds after a fee. You are better off just to spend the money in a coin shop and buy junk silver.

I don't even CRH to begin with, as there's no bank near me I can dump my coins at. Even with that, I would only be able to do pennies and maybe nickels, since I always make a deposit once I start accumulating lots of cash.

When I was CRH`ing I had an established dumping bank and I always took my coins to it and there was never any problems with that. The reason why I have quit is: There's never as much CWR`s anymore and they are all mint sealed and either fresh from the mint or fresh from the ARP. In my opinion the U.S. is a wayyy easier country to CRH in but you just need to find the right bank for it. Also you never know which teller you will get and sometimes they just want to be a @#$% to you. I have had some problems with tellers in the past but never ever regarding dumping. It got extremely frustrating for me and my S.A.D. wasn't helping so me stopping was yet to come. Also, people have said I look weird taking old coins out of a fountain but have never said I look weird taking a huge box of coins out of a bank and I feel more weirder at the bank because taking that box of coins out is usually ALL I do there. Finding old pennies and 1 or 2 silver dimes per box and having pennies not even available anymore makes Canada a very boring CRH`ing country. .

If you can get the paper wrappers for free, you can roll hunt for free (provided your bank doesn't charge a fee to order or dump). Don't dump your coins in a big pile, and don't bother counting them.
Say you open a roll, and find 3 keepers. Put the keepers aside, and add 3 junk coins to the roll. Wrap it up, and you're done. I found that to be easiest for every denomination except halves (easier to count 1 by 1) and cents (too many keepers per roll).
As for the cost/benefit analysis of CRHing... can't help you there. I have so little free time these days that it's hard to justify taking 1-2 hours out of my night or weekend to find 10 coins that I could easily buy for 25 cents each at my LCS. Hence why I've done maybe 4 boxes since 2012.

Quote: If I wrap my rolls, they have to sit there and count it by each coin. ugh. Are you telling me if you bring your own CWR to your local bank, they will open the roll and count out every coin in the roll? When I'm done with a box, I just roll them back up and put them back in the box. I have a pile of nickels and a pile of cents to replace them in the roll with. My dumping banks sometimes count the rolls in the box, other times they don't.

Talk to your bank about bags to dump your coins in. Usually businesses do it, but they sometimes let customers do it. I've never done it, but usually you just take all your coins, and put it in a massive thick bag that can hold up to like 200lbs. They put them in their coin sorter in the back room, and it takes a week I guess for them to process it and all. The money goes straight back into your account. Just take the money out after a week, and continue the process. If you do a box of nickels and a box of pennies, I'd have $250 going at one time, in case something happens. Dump one week, and when you pick up a box if you order them like I do, pay the $125. And keep going and going.

Am am very fortunate that my main bank is widespread in my area and offers coin counters for free to their customers. I cannot justify the cost of any coin counter charging me a fee. Till then I will continue to do what I do.

In the states with the half dollars... how do you return those to your bank? Do they have rolls for 'em or do you just hand 'em in?

You Crh guys aren't going to like this at all. I cannot possibly think of a bigger waste of time when it comes to this UNLESS it is strictly for fun. There is very little out there to find anymore and bank tellers think you are a giant pain to deal with. A much better use of your time and finances ,frequent your local shops and markets and plow through the dollar junk bin for varieties.

I am fortunate that all my banks branches have coin counting machines. However, I have not coin rolled hunted in years. I always needed to have the same mindset that pacificoin mentioned: You have to do it for a hobby and fun first and the coin finds secondary. I got dissapointed many times by going through rolls of coins hoping to find something in each roll but not find anything for boxes at a time. You got to be willing to yeild nothing and sometimes that took the fun out of it for me. Like going out golfing for enjoyment but having a bad day and realized you worked really hard to shoot a 160.
With that said though, I will plan to CRH again in the future and in denominations I haven't previously searched. I got the bug again and it is really easy with my bank's coin counters that are free for me to use.

Same as above to a large degree but I'll add this. With the exception of the occasional solid box of coins for the current year I have not gotten a box where I haven't made money on (based on published values such as Red Book). The amount of value varies between a few bucks and a few hundred. Obviously there aren't many $400 boxes of cents or nickels but when it happens it's like hitting the lotto. But as noted, the fun factor plays in as well so hopefully that helps to offset stingy boxes. Keep in mind that if you are a particular kind of CRH enthusiast (e.g. Only looking for LWCs or silver dimes) then you will always tend to be into the few dollar boxes and need to rely on the fun factor. This is to me where the cost of doing a box comes into play. As noted above I pick my coins one at a time from a roll and replace with one of my own discards. On CWRs I tend to reuse the wrappers unless they look spent. On MWRs I use a new wrapper you can get on line for a few dollars for a 1000 wrappers. Fraction of a penny per MWR searched. I also return in the same box I accepted the coins in. Neatly organized and ready for inspection should the teller want to (they don't check my boxes). I turn between $50 in cents or $200 in nickels every 2-3 weeks. Most of the folks not finding CRH profitable are those who don't collect error or variety coins. I can understand why it wouldn't be as rewarding financially or perhaps with the fun factor. That's a personal choice. And if it ends up costing you then buying at the LCS is the right choice. Good luck on your decision.

I really quit a long time ago. I think about starting again, but have resisted for some similar reasons. I have to allocate my time wisely and there is just no room for serious CRH right now. Sure, the occasional roll or three is given to me, but that is about it. Luckily I can enjoy what people are posting on CCF.
