This is my first gold purchase....small $2.50 Indian from 1912. I purchased in raw form from a reputable dealer at the huge coin show last week in Dalton, GA. The dealer graded it as AU+.

I have studied up on this series, and I believe the coin grades anywhere from AU58 to MS62. I know there isn't a whole lot of difference in those grades....other than perceived value.

I want to verify my thoughts with a TPG....I am willing to fork over the money to get it graded just to have peace of mind since I am new to this type of coin.

Who would you all recommend I send this coin to? I do not have any memberships with PCGS, NGC, or ANACS.

ANACS pricing is cheapest at $19 (grading) + $21 (shipping). $40 total. PCGS & NGC require memberships to submit coins.
Rest in Peace

Why not post a picture or two here at CCF first.

What is your goal in TPG? Verifying your thoughts is better and cheaper done looking at already certified pieces in holders and not spending money on TPG - unless you think the dealer was way off and it's a choice mint state piece. Otherwise you'll just be throwing $40+ at it without much to gain. Anyway, use ANACS if you're not an ANA member ( ANA Members can submit to NGC).

I am not very good with pics on the iPhone....but I'm attaching my two best looking pics to show the detail.

The obverse does have details in the feathers, they're just hard to see in the shot. Different angles produce different details. This shot is taken after the coin was already placed in the Capital holder.

The reverse shows the feather detail on the chest of the eagle. This shot was taken before I placed it in the Capital holder.

The 1912 is notorious for a weak strike on the obverse....as shown in the MS64 example on PCGS Photograde: http://www.pcgs.com/photograde/#/2.5Ind/Grades.

Opinions are welcome!

Very nice coin. These have a motiff desgin and therefore the highest point of the coin are the mirror fields, making higher graded Indians rarer/more valuable . Nice coin and a couple of grade points can go a long way. Especially with this design

Looks pretty nice and I have no argument with the dealer's AU+ grade. If it has great luster/color then I'd consider submitting it and hope for a 62. Good luck!
