I just bought 6 Denarii including 4 of "the good emperors" Trajan, Hadrian, Antoninus Pius and Marcus Aurelius. The coins I bought also included denarii of Faustina and Commodus.

I saw a Nerva that would complete my set of "the good emperors" and I would like some input as to whether or not it looks good.

Thanks in advance.

I cannot see anything strange in this coin, I think is genuine but the portrait is very damaged, scratches, slighty porous surfaces...
If you want this coin try not to pay a big amount for it.

Ancient coin collecting is not a 50 metres race, is not a Marathon, Itīs like a walk by the forest enjoying the different plants, stones, rivers with no hurry at all.
If you are not sure, wait for another coin...

For $30 it is a good buy. How much higher I am unsure.
I stay away from silver myself (personal preference).
Take some time to think it over. You just bought a group of denarii and Nerva is the toughest of the 'good' emperors (excluding Aelius Caesar).
I always liked the Concordia reverse of Nerva with the two hands clasped. He was pushing the idea of harmony with his military. He adopted Trajan to keep the army happy with the new regime.

The coins have been waiting for a home for 2,000 years.
Take some time to choose !

Wow, thanks so much for the help and advice. I will wait and see how high the Nerva goes. When I was researching Nerva I did see one with the clasped hands reverse- a very interesting looking coin. Thanks for the heads up on the Trajan. I will try to take my time and enjoy the process.

I'd hold onto my $30 and save up another $30 for a much nicer example than this one. Too many scratches.

Ancient coin collecting is a new world full of surprises and amazing stories...
sometimes you can follow the career of an engraver through several emperors, other you can see a reverse coined by an emperor used by the rival emperor who killed him...
Game of thrones!
(but without Daneeris and dragons, sorry...)

We all have different budgets. I would skip this coin, it is mediocre. Now showing you gold coins is evil, as you properly are not going to budget for them. However, this one is poor quality.I saw some on v-coins for 50-60 that were superior. I stand by my belief, and the statements told to me from ebay sellers, that they sell all the mediocre coins via ebay. Now if that is your budget, I understand but I avoid them. Truly if you have a nice coin, worth a lot you go to CNG or somewhere else. I must confess I once acquired a Hostilian for 250 on ebay, sold it for 600 later on. So sometimes you can win.

To Caesar77:
I have shown these two aurei only to show better the similarities between the obverse portraits of Nerva and Trajan.
These two images are taken from "ACSEARCH", I donīt have gold coins in my collection (I cannot afford them) and of course I wasnīt pretending "to be evil".
Iīm using a foreign language to express elaborate concepts, sometimes I suppose that one sentence is going to be taken in one sense and unfortunately is understood in another sense. I never try to criticise, to humiliate or to discourage to anyone.
I usually buy my coins in small markets where I can use what I have learned about Ancient Coins to get bargains from sellers that think that "studying about coins is wasting your time".
Years ago, I tried to explain something about the coins that I picked up...
...only to see how they asked me 5 euros for the same coins that they were asking 1!

Tongue in cheek my friend. I did not mean "evil" literally. It just was such a dire contrast between a mediocre coin and a superlative one. Please don't take all those negative connotations to heart, I know you only have the best of intentions.
