And I just don't have the expertise on error coins in general to know the difference well enough to differentiate between the two.

In truth, I don't think we're going to get to be sure about it. There's sufficient evidence of hard brushing on the obverse to make a strong case for someone trying to smooth over serious PMD, and any prudent evaluator is going to factor that possibility heavily in their opinion and come down "undecided."

The more I look at it, the less I'm sure. You got some really nice images on my point about behind the hair, but the area around the E is still a big question. I just don't know what to think. I'm leaning toward someone dropping a bunch of solder onto it to try and do some sculpture and then trying to remove the result. And honestly I don't think I could do any better with it even holding it in my hand.

We could beat our heads against it until we were all bleeding, and not come any closer to certainty. It's probably best left as a head-scratcher.

Thanks for the compliment. I could probably do better if I used my wife's Nikon SLR, but my smartphone does ok!

Here are some shots of the 'E' area.

The thing that wants to be noticed is how the toning propagates around it - *something* altered the metal there so it didn't tone.

Good pickup dave, I'll go one further and now I'm 90% sure of alteration... look at the rim toning behind liberty's head, it skips from solid to fade to solidish again and you can see how the fade was as strong as the top. And follows the theory and pattern of the bottom obverse being messed with. Actually since the beginning of me writing this my suspicion has grown to 95%. I hope I'm wrong though matt

Um, I don't think there's much question it's been messed with....

I think I might just throw it out on ebay and see if I get any takers. I am still not sold on it being completely PMD, it still "looks" struck through in hand.

Nor I, but much of the evidence has been destroyed, I think, and that's evidentiary in itself.
