I think it would be neat to have an icon to click on to follow a CCF member. Next to the members avatar it could show the number of followers. I wonder how many if any members would follow me

"Ranking" members in any way is not a good idea. Some people already put way too much weight on post counts.

It weighs a ton when you're the one trying to carry it.

Bobby is right; in forums I moderated members were competing for affections. Things like karma points initially meant to support thoughtful responses quickly devolved in a handful of folks back-slapping each other to inflate their popularity. Another feature instituted was a 'thank-you' bump that allowed members to show appreciation for a thoughtful response without having to type out a word or two of thanks. Less personal.

As I think about it more, the Karma bumps were eventually revised where you could only bump another's karma periodically. This reduced the circular back-slapping. To me, keep it simple. As for followers, the informal recognition nested in a response has more substance. I appreciate many members here and many have something interesting to teach and share. They are sure to get my attention.

Many senior members have earned their recognition from the forum body through their posts and contributions, positive forum demeanor, and availability/access. That's why I opened this thread. John's comments are worthy of interest!

there is a friend button at the top of member's posts that you can click. It is then stored on your friends file under tools at the top of the page. in that file there are the names of the members you have friended, when you click on their name it takes you to their profile, just thought I would share incase you guys didn't know(I only noticed a couple weeks ago)...

is that kind of what you were thinking of?
Feel free to call me Will.
Rest in Peace

I love the friends feature on CCF. Every two or three months I go to it and it says "Sorry to break it to you, but you have no friends." and I break up laughing for at least ten minutes.
Rest in Peace

Well, pick somebody and make them your friend!

The 'Friends' feature tells you whom YOU have selected. It doesn't tell you who has selected you. You could have hundreds ....or not.
