I live in Ecuador. Bought some very rare reales. But as far as I can tell there is no such thing as an 8 reales 1864. Can someone help?

to CCF! They look authentic, but I'm not a professional when it comes to Ecuador coins.

NGCCoins says differently. On the site below, assuming they have the proper picture, the two coins look different. There are obvious differences with the person's face, and even more with the bird. On the example on the cite the coin also does not stay G.J.8.R.

All signs point to fake, in my opinion.

Site!

thank you for the info. it is not km# pn8 for sure. the km# pn9 (with no picture) has the reeded edge if you click on select. I was in tool and die for 40 years, the expense to make one poor quality coin would be expensive. why would they (who ever they are) do it?

I am doing a checklist on Ecuadorian coins. If possible I would greatly appreciate some additional information on the counterfeit 8 Reales of 1862. A better quality photo would also be great. If you don't want to spend much time on it I would be happy to receive it on loan, get better photos and confirm all of the physical specifications.

Apparently you don't wish to receive emails and they won't let me put an email address here but a simple web search will probably turn up my email address if you care to write or if you can post the physical specifications that would be great. Thanks for any help you can give me. Best regards, Dale Seppa.

PS I think I just attached a photo of the legitimate piece but not sure as I am new on the forum and dont' quite understand everything yet.

The coin is a counterfeit - actually a numismatic forgery because it was not made to circulate as money. It was created recently to fool collectors. The coin was created from an image that was transferred using either a computer engraving or electro-deposition method. In any event this die (or mold) was NOT made before the first half of the 20th century.

The reason a forger will make a poor looking product like this is that he can make a small profit selling to a new collector who accepts coins for what they appear to be. He does not need to spend a lot of money making better dies. A classic case of the same kind of terrible forgery selling readily is the 1882 Zs 8 Reales from Mexico. The coins are produced in huge numbers in China where they can be purchased for as little as ten cents US. That coin too is a hideous copy that no one but a novice would believe. Yet they are constantly appearing on ebay posted by people who have gotten scammed or by people who are crooks. Right now there are two types on ebay:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Republics-M...201373661730

http://www.ebay.com/itm/REPUBLICA-M...161715961473

The first type is newer and not as commonly seen, but the second type has 5 being sold right now. The number of fakes on ebay exceeds the number of genuine 1882 8Rs posted at this time.
