Can anyone give me some pointers on how to best photograph my coins for posting here and asking about grading?

I struggle to get good lighting. I either get a huge glare or or a really dark grainy image.

I was just introduced to what's called "18% grey" colored cardboard to use as a background. Seems to work really well and I highly recommend getting an 8x10 sheet on ebay for around $10. Aside from that I'll let others more experienced chime in but I highly suggest u get the card. It will make you go WOW

Are you using a traditional camera or a smartphone? All my posted pics are from my iPhone. For lighting I use a standard 2 bulb lamp and place the coin underneath. I take different pics with the different light combinations. 90% of the pics I take are great and quite sufficient for the forum. If you're using a smartphone I can give you tips on smartphone coin pics specifically. I use a tan colored background and that works well for most coins, silver or copper. A Manila envelope will work fine.

I simply use 2 drop lights angled at different sides of the coin. I also use a plain sheet of printer paper to set the white balance right. A lot of the more experienced people can tell you all the detailed numbers they use, I'm not THAT good of a photographer though.

No, SsuperDdave is going to direct this to the Photography Forum. We don't discuss Morgans in Modern Coins, do we?

Jefframsey, post a thread in that forum with about the same name as this. In it, list your equipment - what you're using for a camera, what kind of lighting - and maybe put up a couple samples to illustrate the problems you're having.

I've always had problems getting good looking pics when using any kind of artificial light. Natural lighting is always better, especially for silver coins, and the best time to take pics is very early or late in the day when the sun angle is low and you don't have any issues with glare. The sun angle is not as critical for coppers, but early or late in the day also works best for these too. I prefer holding a coin in my hand when taking a pic, but you can use any backdrop that works best for you. Good luck.
