Heritage Auctions - Most collectors of
US coinage are familiar with the name
Victor D. Brenner, best known as the designer of the
Lincoln Cent. His initials VDB are well known for appearing on the reverse of some 1909 cents, with the 1909-S VDB cent considered a key date in all grades.
Of course, the coin designers of the early 20th century were famed sculptors in their own right, and we will occasionally offer their works not in coin auctions, but in our art auctions. Such is the case with his
bronze of Abraham Lincoln, offered in our
2015 May 2 American Art Signature Auction in Dallas. This piece, dated 1907, bears the very familiar right-facing profile of Lincoln, quite similar to the one that has appeared on the cent for over 100 years.
Brenner, born in Lithuania, studied at the Academie Julian in Paris and emigrated to the United States in 1890. Based in New York, he was a member of the National Sculpture Society, the National Arts Club, and the Architectural League. His work can be found at the Architectural League in New York, the Metropolitan Museum, the Paris Mint, and the Vienna Numismatic Society.
