Only the top half the date is showing. What do you think the date is? Can you see it?

Shield nickels weren't made in 1886

I can't decide between 1882 and 1883

Looks an awful lot like another 8. For that reason, given the (probably) noticeable differences between the top of a 2 and a 3, I'm calling it a 3.

Oh, that is right. 1886 is a key date V nickel, wasn't thinking of that. I was thinking that too, looks like 1888. Has to be 1883 or below lol. Maybe it is a 1883/2 since it looks like a two or three lol.

1882, digits are too close together to be an 83.

A week in vinegar will decide it.

Does that really work soaking it in vinegar? I thought of getting some nic-a-date for these dateless Shield nickels but I would sooner just get rid of them and let someone else do it if they want. Maybe they are hoping for one of the key dates since people buy them?

I have used NIC-a-Date on Buffalo nickels and once on a V nickel that was missing its date in hopes that it was an 1885. I saw part of a 5 but the 9 was worn smooth and so it could have been an 8 until Nic-a-date proved that it was a common 1895 V nickel. A drop of Nic-a-date, and within about 40 seconds I saw a 9 show and then neutralized it in water. I ended up selling that in a lot of other junk on ebay. It would have been sweet if it was an 1885 to unload on ebay for a few hundred for a nickel that I picked up for around 40 cents. Instead I think I broke even selling it as junk on ebay with a lot of other troubled coins to sell cheap.
