Dave,
I think your explanation fairly well nails it as I remember.

Boy, there sure is a lot to learn as a new collector! I'm so glad to have this community and all of the helpful people here. I'm just trying to read a little bit at a time, because it can certainly be overwhelming and time consuming!

Why does the RPM get stronger as it gets into later stages? I always thought it would get weaker as the die became more worn over time. Just curious. :)

Most of the time it doesn't. The devices on the mint mark wear down like the other devices. So the RPM usually gets weaker on later die states. (the only case I know of is the 1956-D/S which appears stronger in the later die states) Take a look at coppercoins for the years that have more than one die state and you can see that is so. Even on class 2 doubled dies it is harder to find them on later die states. I have a 1961 DDR that you can't tell by the outside devices that it was a DDR, but the devices on the EPU still show that it was a doubled die.

Thanks everyone for all your replies. I just started looking into mint marks and , wow, there is a lot there to learn!! I thought 1859 Canada Large Cents had a lot of varieties... This certainly is just as, or more of, a daunting task.

However, nothing beats the "EURUKA" moment when something you found actually matches!

I very appreciate this community and the vast amount of knowledge that everyone shares. I'm 48, and have been into coins for a long time, but there is always, always something to learn and this is the place for it! I didn't even know that CopperCoins existed, being mostly into Canadian. What a task that site must have been to both set up, and maintain!

Thanks again!
