A shop has a couple of silver pieces from the Atocha shipwreck (or so they claim) and I know nothing about them other than they look like the coolest thing I've ever seen. They're not graded and are just in little bags. When I look at pictures of other Atocha coins, these from the shop look right, but look much less damaged and just better overall. The price tag is at about $500 and I'm just wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction to learn more about them or how to tell if these are the real deal or what the price should be.
Rest in Peace

I Would say if you are interested in Atocha shipwreck coins don't buy unless they are certified as genuine by NGC. they seem to have more knowledge in these coins than other TPG. the shipwreck coins can easily be faked if your not knowledgeable in this area.

Here's a group of Atocha 4R's selling for $525 each. They have attribution, and Sedwick is a reliable dealer. Do these look like the 8R you are being offered?

Just my opinion but I don't see why you would choose to collect a saltwater-damaged barely recognizable cob over a problem-free 8 reales pillar dollar.

It looks like those but much more defined. I think that based on the ones that were graded that I've seen the one at the shop I found is fake. I base my opinion only on the fact that it's in such good condition compared to others. I asked the shop owners why they haven't gotten it graded themselves and they said "We don't have the time"...that's the biggest BS I've ever heard :P

jgenn, why does anyone collect anything? Why do we collect coins and some people collect toy elephants? People collect because they're interested in certain things. I don't find the pillar coins attractive personally.

Without the attribution I would expect a price of around $250-300 for authentic corroded shipwreck 8R cobs. I don't suspect the dealer particularly, just that the price is out of line without the attribution. I have bought several cobs from shops and on ebay which appear to be authentic. I've made guesses as to which shipwreck they came from based on dates (for some), but no dealer has sold them with any attribution.

The Practical Book of Cobs by Daniel Sedwick is a very good reference book that I personally recommend, lots of useful information about cobs including most of the important shipwrecks in history.

The nature of cobs and corroded shipwreck coins make them prime targets for forgers.

If you are new to the field I would suggest purchasing one or two from a recognized expert in those type of coins. Sedwick's is a good source.

Thereafter, you can combine reading of reference books and hands on study of your known authentic specimens to build your own knowledge.

Hope this helps.
