Have you ever put coin(s) back in circulation and later regretted it? Maybe you used to collect 40% halves and spent them or turned them into the bank. Or maybe you had a coin that you thought was common and ended up being a good date. What do you most regret putting back in circulation?

Back in 1965, as silver coins were starting to disappear from circulation, I remember spending 7 silver quarters, just to get rid of them. Soon afterward, I realized that I probably shouldn't have done that. From that point on, I started keeping all silver quarters and dimes that came my way, along with the occasional silver half dollar. Over the next year or two, I accumulated about 700 silver quarters (300 of them 1964's). I still have them.

I kind of have a similar but different dilemma. My parents used to save bicentennial quarters when they first came out because it was a pretty big deal back then. It wasn't like nowadays where there is a different picture change on the coin every three months. Well, now I have inherited like 80$ worth of bicentennial quarters that I know are basically worth face value and will be for decades to come. However, I cant seem to release them back into circulation. My parents have had these long since before I was born...how do I just drop them into a bank for what equates to ten percent of my monthly rent?

I may have discarded a Canadian silver quarter once in the course of experimenting with coin-op machines.

This is a better thread for a person that doesn't collect coins but spent a really rare one and later found out how much it was worth. I myself do not have any coin like that to kick myself in the back about and I am very happy about that.

All the WLH's, SLQ's, IHC's and Franklin's I used to find in my Father's change when I was a kid.

In Austria in 2001, the year before the Euro was introduced, I'd got two 20-schilling coins in my pocket, dated 1980 and 1981. I wanted to keep both of them, but then I needed money for something, and spent the 1981 coin as it was in slightly worse condition than the 1980, and I thought I would probably get a better specimen quite easily. On a further visit that year I exchanged high denomination notes at various banks and built up a collection of 20-schilling coins, but I never did see another 1981 20-schillings, although I saw dozens of 1980s...

Grandma saved silver liberty dimes from her job at the little post office in Pewamo, gave them to my brother and I. We would walk uptown and spend them on penny candy. This would be back about 1970.

I may or may not have spent a silver dime a long time ago. My dad thought 1963 was the last year for silver, so he feels guilty of accidentally spending 1964 dimes and quarters, and I may have had a 1964 dime a long time ago. Regardless, I've found 3 dimes dated 1964 in the past month, so I guess that makes up my possible mishap years ago.

In the late 80's my parents got us Whitman folders, a couple of quarter rolls and a price guide. I remember it saying one was worth $20+.... Didn't stop the folders to eventually be emptied out to buy baseball cards. I have no idea which quarter it was, but I have to assume silver and key. I do remember it being the only one in that section of folders. Oh well, memories....

I can still picture having a 1969 large date dime in my hand when I was young. I just recently started collecting coins and had no clue at the time but I remember asking my uncle about it. That one went back into circulation.

My current problem is the opposite. I have plenty of coins that I really need to put back in circulation. I find too many "keepers."

My dad used to eat Cheerios nearly every morning. We always had a box. I wasn't collecting when the Cheerios dollar came out, but pretty sure he was eating Cheerios then.

I have some vague recollection of the free dollar being in the box and telling my dad it is basically just like a dollar off coupon and of no other value.

So for me it is maybe a Cheerios Dollar.

A couple years ago, I got a Prez$ in change that I put aside since I was pretty sure I didn't already have one, and 75% sure it was a NIFC. A couple weeks later, I realized that I had spent it by mistake on some coffee. I very nearly spent both a 1964 quarter and a 2009 nickel, but I noticed and was able to save them.

Other than that, I'm with Jbuck. I have way, way too much money ties up in BU halves and dollar coins, but I'm having a hard time spending them.

I swapped one silver quarter for a clad quarter in Aldi's shopping cart. For those shopping at Aldi's, you have to put a quarter in the slot of the shopping cart's handle in order to get a cart. After returning the shopping cart, the coin get popped out. But at check-out point, the cart get switched to the customer lined behind you ...
