I used to pick out all the copper cents 1959-1982. but
that's when copper prices were high. I've not only stopped
since the slide, but I dumped them all to buy Mercury dimes
and a few nice walkers. copper hoarding is not a good idea
any more.

Out of hand? Never!

I don't keep ALL the copper I come across: if its green or discolored it gets thrown back. That said, I have amassed a hoard of 40+ lbs of copper cents from CRH, which have all been thoroughly picked over for varieties.

I've been thinking the same thing. Who knows when they will discontinue the cent, if ever. It is been apart of everyone's life forever. Not sure if the country would allow it. On the other hand, if it were to be discontinued. Your going to say: scenario 1- (high copper prices):1-" Man, I wish I would have saved all the copper cents I had. That would have been a nice payday."

Scenario 2- (low copper prices): " I can't believe they discontinued the Lincoln Cent."

I'm only keeping the ones that I started this journey of error collecting with. I'mpretty sure, I missed several errors knowing what I know now.

Take Wheats no brainier. Take Indian Head no brainier.

Memorial Copper. My advice is to strip Copper from the Public. Take only S Mint Memorial Cents.

You will not find much more then a Oz's every 500-1000 Cents unless you get teller public rolls then at times you will find solid rolls here on the West Coast.

It will not get out of control with Memorial S Mint Copper. Trading is low for all Metals including Base Metals. If you see Copper is trading around $10 a pound take it all. Till then easy stacking of Copper Memorial is the S Mint.

Most Months I strip thur 4-6 Banks Boxes some boxes are build with Mini Marts some from random banks I go to. I find about a Pound of Memorial S-Mints a month.

I have saved every single cent that has crossed through my hands ever since 1997. Here is my method for keeping about 90,000 cents "under control".

All-You-Coin-Roll-Hunters...
Everything is sorted by date and mint into quart sized Ziploc baggies, then stored in the plastic totes by decade and mint. After a baggie is filled with 1000 coins it goes into the "Treasure Chest".

Whoops! Edited my mistake. 90,000 give or take. Guesstimation by weight after they were sorted. I like this method a lot better than the 20+ coffee cans of unsorted cents that I had stashed everywhere. It really makes searching for varieties a breeze by looking at a bag of one date/mint.

who knows if they will ever stop minting pennies and nickels? Canada did. I think England did too. who knows if they will ever lift the ban on melting them? I don't stack copper. it s also too heavy and bulky. I do however, like silver eagles and bullion. the only gold I can hoard is from metal detecting because it is like 65 times as expensive as silver.

I moved this to the CRH forum for more opinions.

For the record, I keep all copper as well.

Ndgoflo... WOW. That is amazing. Good method though. Time consuming. I'm sure it isn't as bad as it sounds once you get a system down. my Wife would Kill me!
