I am slowly starting to work through my " unknown " coins pile and there are lots from various periods that I have tried and failed to identify. These 2 are giving me a headache right now, I have trawled through dozens of pages on RPC with no success for the first coin and coin 2 looks like a greek coin to me Coin - 1 Weight - 8.70g Coin - 2 Weight - 5.70g As always, your help is much appreciated. TIA

For provincials, asiaminorcoins.com is excellent. Under Gallery/Search I put in "Poseidon dolphin" there are a number of coins of interest.

Thanks Pish good find that. The first coin is still proving a bit of a problem though, having done a search of the possible emperors I have narrowed it down to 3 that fit the bill. Vespasian Titus Domitian The bust fits those 3 but not the reverse whereas the reverse matches a Geta issue ( thx chrsmat ) the legend is doing my head in too It looks like it starts with IMP and ends with AVG but I cant make sense of the middle portion. The reverse starts with C O, the other parts make no sense to me whatsoever. Back to searching I go Thx again Pish & Chrsmat for your efforts.

I feel for you, I really do. I have loads I am still trying to identify. For coin 1, I wouldn't have said that any of the emperors look anything like the portrait. Did you look for Gallienus as AM suggested?

Morning Pish Yes I have gone through the Gallienus issues as suggested by AM but found no match unfortunately. My suggestions of the emperor were based purely on the strong features/ ugly portrait & hook nose of the bust which to my eye matched those suggested, not being familiar with earlier issues doesn't help though. Chrsmat spotted a Geta coin with the reverse imagery but the bust doesn't match nor the reverse legend, that made me search Caracalla & sept sev but no match there either. I will keep at it over the weekend, if I have no joy its going on the " mystery " pile. Thx again for your efforts

Bacchus, What can I say Don't know how but I missed your post, I only came back to this thread by chance and look what I find. Although I cant find the exact coin I have managed to decipher the legend and find the same bust on another coin. Many thanks

:) No problem -
I collected (and wrote a book on) provincial coins of Diadumenian - so by default I'm reasonably familiar with his dad....

I am surprised you missed another thread of mine Bacchus, I posted 2 provincial coins that needed identifying and they both turned out to be Diadumenian.
