I'm thinking about buying one of these. Which mint has a stronger strike, Philadelphia or Denver? Or does it vary? Thanks. Ed

I've no experience to answer the question, so I concocted an experiment in research. I went to Heritage and looked up results. In the cases of both mints, the number of Full Head examples very nearly equaled the number of Mint State examples in their archive. The takeaway for me, even considering that Heritage is going to see only the better ones, is that neither should be expected with less than an excellent strike.

It actually surprised the heck out of me, because even if FH's are common for the year, the non-FH 65's and above ought to be in the mix there too. Not so much.

If you go to Google Books and search " Standing Liberty quarter" it will give you a link to J.H. Clines 2007 book. That should have all the info you're looking for.

No, I was thinking of a higher grade example for my collection, although I will eventually need a lower grade example for my 7070. Just haven't gotten that far yet.

Aces, Thanks for the book reference, I'll have to check it out.

Right now the Type 1 1917 SLQ has become my favorite coin.

When I win the lottery I'm doing a set of these in strong AU with circulation cameo. They're as beautiful as it gets in that configuration.

Circulation cameo is when there is a noticeable difference in toning between the fields and devices, with original surfaces. This is not an AU coin Ddave but does have great eye appeal and circulation cameo.

Yeah, like that.

I had a shot at what I thought the "prototypical" example from Executive Coin a few years back, but they wanted $300 and I didn't want to go over $250. It is now on my list of regrets.

My Philadelphia (Type I, II and III) SLQ's have some pretty strong strikes and the best value for the grade. Some of those Denver and San Francisco SLQ are pretty hurtful on the wallet.

barry , I'm not saying your wrong because I don't know enough about circulation cameos. but to me it looks like the devices obv. & rev. were lightly cleaned to bring out the contrast of the coin, making it look bolder. anyone chime in and tell me why I'm wrong.
