Abu al-Abbas Abdullah ibn Muhammad as-Saffah

Dated 135 AH (753 AD)
He was the First Abbasid Caliphate
Obverse: in the margin "In the Name of God, this dirham was struck in al-Kufa in the year five and thirty and one hundred" (135). In the center "There id no diety except God alone"
Reverse: in the margin " Muhammead is the messenger of God. He sent him with guidance and the true religion to reveal it to all religions if the polythesist abhor it" In the center "Muhammad The messenger of God"

Wow this is some early Islamic coinage. The Abbasid Patriarch Excellent choice! A real historical piece. I also noticed the legend, naming the mint al=Kufi. This is most likely Kufa, Iraq. Just south of Baghdad. Baghdad really didn't become the economic and cultural center until the reign of Harun al-Rashid.

Al-Kufa was the capital of the Abbsid empire in the early time before as you say Baghdad became an important city.

Obv: Kufic legend: There is no deity except/God alone/[There is] no partner to him (in center); In the name of God this dirham was struck in Madinat al-Salaam in year 155 (in margin);
Rev: Kufic legends: Muhammad the Messenger of God (in center); Muhammad is the messenger of God. He sent him with guidance and the true religion to reveal it to all religions even if the polytheists abhor it (in margins)
Mint: Madinat al-Salam (struck 771-772 AD)
