The reverse was polished off. The rim area/setup ring is missing. PSD

People try to make error coins. They think someone will fall for it. When they realize it won't, then they spend it.

These sorts of things can also happen "accidentally" by a coin getting stuck in some kind of industrial machinery. People also do strange things to coins in the name of art, suck as making rings, decorative plaques, tourist knick-knacks and love tokens. And sometimes, bored people simply say things like, "I wonder what would happen to a quarter if I did this to it?" - and when they find out, they get bored with it and spend it.
