I found this stand, or part of a stand. Can it be modified?

I'm sure it could be - no doubt Ray could do it. But note he's saying it's only 4-1/2" tall (assuming closed). You're not going to get a camera very far off the floor without adding a bunch of metal onto that, and I can't imagine it having much vertical travel.

Well, for a usb microscope, maybe. But I have one of these on order: https://www.adafruit.com/product/969

For a camera I think you could mount something like this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/4-way-Macro...271797498587 to a 2x4 post and have more clearance. You would, of course be limited in which coins you could shoot - you need a very different height above the coin for a 14mm trime vs. a 38mm Morgan. Which is why a copy stand works so well, with a rail for the fine focus.

That stand is missing some critical pieces. Go for a standard B&L A-Stand if you want something to modify. Here is an example:

You need to add a bellows mount riser in place of the hoop.

I'm not sure what that is. If its one of these

Then I already have it. I'm pretty handy so then is there a threaded hole to attach it, or do you have to drill and tap your own?

You need to drill and tap your own, to match the screw pattern of the hoop ring that gets removed. Almost all the stands I've sold have this type of bellows mount / riser.

Another option (the one that Dave took) is to look for a riser for a B&L MonoZoom7 (MZ7) microscope. This riser puts a camera mounted to it centered over the subject stage of the A-Stand. It also works with a "short rise" bellows, like the excellent Vivitar Triple Track. It can also of course mount an MZ7. Because of these 3 uses, Dave's stand has a name, "Santoku". A quick search of "Santoku" will give much info.

Unfortunately the risers are tough to find, but depending on where you live there may be local surplus vendors or microscope service folks that have them. Or, you can wait for one to show up on ebay, but you may end up bidding against me as I snap up every one I can if the price is reasonable (<$150). A search of "monozoom" on ebay turns up several, but they are not cheap. There is even a full stand with MZ7 for $399, which is not too bad, but the MZ7 is overkill in terms of magnification for most numismatic purposes, and we've learned since building Santoku how to get higher resolution with other methods. So the MZ7, while very cool, would probably go unused.
