Perth Mint - Twenty-one years after the debut of The Original Series, Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek follow-up hit the screens amid enormous interest. The Next Generation ran for seven seasons until 1994, becoming a multi-award winning spectacle avidly watched by dedicated followers worldwide.

Set in the Milky Way Galaxy from 2364, the show featured a new crew and a new Federation starship - U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D. Fascination ran high, not least because of the inevitable comparisons to be made between new Captain Jean-Luc Picard, played by Patrick Stewart, and William Shatner's iconic James T. Kirk.

Picard was revealed as a distinguished and multi-talented Starfleet officer, archaeologist and ambassador. Deeply moral, highly logical and hugely intelligent, he was a master of diplomacy and debate. In the same vein as Kirk, he was brave, caring and loyal to those around him. Never hesitating to risk his own well-being where the safety of others was concerned, he also believed deeply in the Starfleet mission of exploration.

But it was not only the new Captain that made a powerful impression. Twice the length of its predecessor and with eight times the amount of interior space, the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D was another equally important drawcard in favour of The Next Generation. Under Picard's command, it successfully completed many important missions, including the defeat of the Borg invasions in 2366 and 2369, and the blockade of the Klingon-Romulan border during the Klingon Civil War.

Star Trek Coin Program

The Perth Mint is proud to announce its continuing mission to release official licensed coins commemorating the cultural phenomenon of Star Trek. Following Captain James T. Kirk and the USS Enterprise NCC-1701, we have now launched the next generation of coins celebrating Captain Jean-Luc Picard and U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D.
