Poll Question
Hiya all, I am saving up for the ANA show in order to buy a nice circulated example of an earlier classic coin for my 7070 album. By the time the show gets here in August, I will have saved approximately $150 so nothing huge at all but that would be my largest single coin purchase ever (since I am not going to include buying-to-sell Wedge Tailed Eagles) so I wanted to have a poll of which type of coin to buy with that amount of money and at least Fine grade for any type of coin (hopefully). I will eventually "catch 'em all" so I am up for whatever but will let you know that I am hoping to get more expensive coins now and cheaper ones later since that seems to be a sound strategy. I know with a lot of these $150 may just not cut it for the grade I want but was just curious what others thought. Thanks for voting!

It really depends on what you like the most. Though. I said a half dollar before Barber.
(Also, the Flying Eagle Small Cent design was the first small cent minted. There are none before it.)
Just my thoughts and information!

amida17 made me stop to think. It would be really cool to have a really nice large cent. I only have a couple of crummy ones. I treasure them but a really nice one....well, that would be pretty cool.
I wish I knew enough about them to make that purchase and I don't trust slabs. I fear that they're graded wrong or fake slabs.
Whatever you decide to get, study up on it before you go.

I wish I could go... It's during school, let alone the cost. I'd have to go with atleast my mom. Well, maybe I can talk he into it. I have about a year. I didn't know what to vote for.

Funny you say that COTW we are bringing my mom for her body too! She has never been to a coin show (this is my second time ;P) and thought it would be cool. So far it appears large cents are the opinion... And most definitely I am going to study well before we go!

I'm a large cent collector primarily so that would be my first choice but you could pick up s very cool seated half for that kind of money. As far as a dollar earlier than a Morgan, good luck. The two Seated dollars are very expensive.

You should be able to find a nice original 1875-S Twenty Cent Piece in F for about $135.00 and in VF for about $150.00. Just be careful as a lot of lower grade double dimes have been cleaned or over dipped and have a white washed out look. It is an odd denomination and you only need one. A lot of collectors overlook it because it is a short series. The 1875 (38,500) and 1876 (14,400) are the lowest mintage issues, the 1875-CC (133,290) is the most expensive solely because of its popularity as a Carson City minted coin.

I too thought about the 20 cent piece as any decent ones seemed to be quite expensive and it does seem cool to have a non-circulating denomination.

My vote a early Half Cent. Also would keep an eye out for a .20 piece, if the right one is available. Best of luck and keep at it!

Thanks for opinions! Quarters bust out from behind too but at least I think I have narrowed it down a little bit. Interesting to see what others would go for!

Quote: I too thought about the 20 cent piece as any decent ones seemed to be quite expensive That is exactly the misconception most collectors have about the 20 cent piece. The 1875-S had a mintage of 1,155,000 and is quite affordable as a type coin in all grades. The 1875 and 1876 are the two scarcest issues due to their very low mintages but can be found with some searching. After the 1875-S the 1875-CC can be easily found being a CC mint coin but its popularity makes an over rated coin value wise unlike the 1875 and 1876 which 20 cent enthusiasts believe are quite under valued. for anyone interested here is a good web site on this denomination. http://www.doubledimes.com/Collecting.html

Your best bet would be a seated liberty half. You could probably get a common date in VF condition for around $150, maybe even better condition depending on the seller. Seated dollars even in good sell for over $200

Yeah looking over the prices it appears Seated dollars are quite expensive... Which makes me want one even more. Maybe if I sold a couple more things... But that is a huge maybe so I will leave that for now.
