Interesting the way the stars go into the rim.

 That's very odd.

The "50" on the reverse doesn't look right. The date looks a bit crude. Perhaps a contemporary counterfeit?

I bought it in a LCS for $60. The shop had it graded as F. I've been searching the Internet and reading about these contemporary counterfeit coins. I'm not sure if this is counterfeit or legit. I did find a thread showing lots of varieties of this coin and having the stars come all the way out to the edge seems to me like it was happening on quite a few legit coins in that thread: https://goccf.com/t/103963&whichpage=10

Seems to match up well with O-108, although there's no denticles to help and I didn't go through the whole date in Overton. It would be an extremely late die state, as shown by the missing denticles and stars drawn to the edge. That's how the dies wore with these. VF25, maybe 30?

Thanks for all of the info on this and my other coins. I am learning so much every time I post something here and I read everyone else's posts as well. What a great community forum. On the Capped Bust half dollar, it seems like I got a great deal. It was in a cardboard holder marked 'Fine' so $60 puts me well under the coins value, even if it comes in at VF20. At 25-30, I think I am way ahead. Not that I will sell her, I just like to make profitable investments. Now to find the right holder to display it in...

Yeah, I'd be OK with this one at $60.

Looks about VF-20. Only thing that bothers me are the black spots on the obverse and reverse. Still at $60 it is hard to go too wrong.

Is there any way to remove the black spots (which appear to be dirt) without hurting the coin's value?
