I was sorting through some Lincolns and noticed that the mint mark on a couple of 1989 D cents is in a different position. On one it is between the 9 and 8, on the other is is under the 8. Was wondering if this is a significant variety. The "D" also looks different....thinner and larger on one than the other.
im sure that others will chime in as well, but your mint mark is normal. the were punched into the die's by had - then. pretty much anywhere under the date is acceptable. I have see a great deal of different placements, especiall on the 1950's cents. the "ah-ha moment" is really that you made the correct observation - nice going there...
It's normal, the MM is simply punched in by had. Starting in 1990, the MM was included in master dies. So really, on any coin before 1990 the MM could be anywere.
It is possible for different mint mark styles to be used on some years. http://www.varietyvista.com/Denver%...s%20Cent.htm Note MMS-003-MMS-007 did overlap some years. But it looks like the 1989-D were all the same style. So they way it was punched into the die may have altered the shape of one of the dies that struck your coin. So the mint mark location can vary depending on where it was placed by hand as others have mentioned. (below date and to the right of the bust) After 1990 the locations are the same as it is part of the design of the master die for the different mints. No more RPMs after 1990. If there is a spread on the mint marks after that date, it is probably a doubled die/die deterioration or a machine doubled issue.
Thanks for the info. Never noticed the different position of the mint marks before but wasn't really looking for it. I just looked at a couple 1983 Proof half dollars and noticed the same thing...significantly different placement of the mint mark. Don't know how I didn't notice this before...it's so obvious!
On the proof coins the mintmark was added to the Master in 1985 so for 1985 and later all the mintmarks for that year will be in the same position. (There may be variation between years but not within the year.)
As others noted this is normal for the era. They really got to be way out of position for anybody to care and then the folks that do are far and few between.
