Has anyone ever seen or know where I could get the following variety? It is listed in the Charlton book as Variety Rev 2. I have searched through hundreds of 49's without ever coming across one. Being a die clash, I would think that there would be more than one out there. Thanks for any help

Sorry to resurrect a dead thread but I had a question about this variety. This seems oddly scarce for just a die clash. Is their really a demand for it if you have one, I have only found 5 previous sales(I found a 6th but it just looked like PMD not the actual die clash) in the past several years and all seemed like absurd prices. On top of which all those sales that I found so far were all circulated. Maybe JimmyD and Dollarman who are still active ended up finding some in these past 6 years? Has anyone seen, bought or sold any of these? Thanks.

So the clash is part of his ear?

Yeah I believe it's just the deepest part of the inner ear. If you look at the obverse of a normal 49 the most inner part of the ear is much deeper then the rest of the inner ear which is in the shape of the half moon.

I have seen a couple for sale in the last couple of years but the prices were more than what I am willing to pay for a Die Clash. I have numerous other clashes on my Silver Dollars that didn't cost a premium.

Yeah it's weird to see only a few over the last few years and all were VF-AU costing anywhere from $100-160 for what would normally be a $25-30. Seems excessive for a die clash, also given the 670K mintage I would expect to see so many more.

Has anyone thought much more about these half moon dollars? A few seem to have sold at quite lofty prices. Anyone else collecting them out there? 1949 PL 64 old embossed ICCS cert with what looks like half moon And a MS66 PCGS If I'm reading other threads correctly ICCS no longer views the 1949 as having a PL strike. But PCGS still considers them to be PL's. Has any view on this changed?

I've owned 3 of them (EF-40, AU-55, MS-65). The latest one I had certified by ICCS and is an MS-65. They will label it as 1/2 moon on the holder. It's up to you to identify it and draw attention to it when you submit it though.
I've got another one coming that I also believe will be an MS-65.
I have handled physically and virtually thousands of these dollars from this year, and have gotten better at recognzing them. Same with the FU Manchu but the best I have gotten of a Fu manchu is an MS-64 so far.

Many people obtained the coin when it first came out because of the history. I'm sure that there are 10's of thousands ucked away in drawers all over. Although eror collectors look diligently for them, the average do couldn't care less and take it as normal. Good luck on your hunts.
